When it comes to advancing your legislative agenda, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Fortunately, there are lots of tools you can use in your fight for freedom that can help give you the upper hand.

Here are just a few of the tools we cover in our Legislative Training program:

Your State Legislature’s Website

In today’s digital world, even states are getting in on the game. In most states, your legislature’s website can be a treasure trove of information.

Depending on where you live, you can use the website to do things like:

  • Find committee schedules
  • Search for bills by topic
  • Find cosponsors of a particular bill
  • Track a bill as it moves through the legislature
  • Watch live or recorded hearings
  • Find contact information for lawmakers

Take some spare time to explore your state legislature’s website, and you’ll likely be surprised what you can find.

Bill Tracking Software

There are multiple free and paid bill tracking tools that can help you monitor legislation on the local, state or federal level. Bill trackers can help you monitor legislation by topic, create scorecards, keep your activists updated and more. Some even include an app so you can fight for freedom on the go!

Ballotpedia is a free online encyclopedia on legislatures and lawmakers that includes information on local, state and federal politics.

The site provides things like legislators’ statements on key issues and information about current laws and proposed legislation. It’s also user-friendly—the site is written in plain language, easy to search and feels similar to Wikipedia.

Influence Charts

Influence charts are a great tool you can create yourself using your activists’ knowledge and some of the other resources in this article.

When you’re trying to persuade a legislator to support or oppose a bill, mapping out who they listen to and where they stand on the issue can be invaluable. You can use the chart to develop a list of the primary and secondary influencers in the lawmaker’s circle and see how they all fit together.

Take a look at the example below to get a better idea of how the influencer chart works.

These are just a few of the countless tools you can use in your fight for freedom. To learn more about influencing lawmakers, see if there’s a Legislative Training coming to a city near you. For grassroots tips delivered right to your inbox each week, sign up for our email list.
